A US guided-missile destroyer cruised close to the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea guaranteed by China as US authorities joined talks in Beijing amid a ceasefire in an unpleasant trade war.

The USS McCampbell did a "freedom of navigation" activity, cruising inside 12 nautical miles of the Paracel Island chain, "to challenge unnecessary oceanic cases", Pacific Fleet representative Rachel McMarr said in an announcement.
