US begins the process to ban work permits for spouses of H-1B visa holders

In another real blow for H-1B visa holders, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of the US government has said that it will actualize a work restriction on mates of H-1B visa holders this month. Spouses of H-1B visa holders hold the H-4 visa. The arrangement to prohibit these visa holders from working was first proposed by DHS in late 2017.

"DHS is distributing this notice of proposed rulemaking to change that 2015 last principle. DHS is proposing to expel from its guidelines certain H-4 spouses of H-1B non-immigrants as a class of immigrants qualified for business approval," the DHS site read. This comes as a major aspect of the Spring 2019 Unified Agenda of Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions.

From February 25, 2015, mates of H-1B visa holders who were getting a green card were given work grants. DHS now looks to expel this from its guidelines.

Since 2015, Indians, generally ladies, have been the recipients of the H-4 visa program, representing over 93% of the one lakh visas issued.

As per Denver Post, the standard was in its last stages in February when it was sent to the Office of Management and Budget for the review. "Under the standard making process, the spending office can suggest changes, before kicking the proposed guideline back to Homeland Security," the report states.

In any case, relocation experts state that it is far-fetched that the standard will get actualized this mid-year.
