Vivek Ramaswamy Wins Ohio Republican Primary
Vivek Ramaswamy secured a decisive victory in the Republican primary for Ohio governor, winning an overwhelming 87% of the vote. Backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, he defeated challenger Casey Putsch and will now face Democrat Amy Acton in the general election.
Ramaswamy, a billionaire entrepreneur, previously ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 but later endorsed Trump. He was briefly appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency alongside Elon Musk, though his tenure was short-lived due to reported disagreements.
If elected, Ramaswamy would become one of the few Indian Americans to serve as a U.S. governor, following figures like Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley. He would also be the first Hindu governor in the United States.
Ohio has historically leaned Republican in recent decades, giving Ramaswamy a potential advantage. However, he faces challenges including economic concerns, rising prices, and shifting public opinion.
The campaign was marked by controversy, particularly due to racist remarks made by his opponent. Putsch posted inflammatory comments questioning Ramaswamy’s heritage and citizenship, which drew criticism.
Ramaswamy, aged 40, holds a law degree from Yale and built his fortune through ventures like Roivant Sciences and Strive Asset Management. According to Forbes, his net worth is approximately $2.5 billion.
With strong financial backing and national visibility, his candidacy is expected to draw significant attention in the upcoming election, which could shape Ohio’s political direction.
