Disability of any form is more of mental distress and it breaks the person’s determination to achieve great heights. These Indians have shown that disability is just a state of mind and succeeding in sports is just outstanding. Here are some of the success stories of Indians, who in spite of disability succeeded in life.
Girish Sharma –
After losing his leg in a train accident as a kid, his life came to a stand-still. But Girish didn’t lose hope and became a badminton champion. His only leg is very strong and he can cover the entire court effortlessly. Even as a kid, he played outdoor activities and never let his disability come in the way.
Shekar Naik –
Shekar became T20 Blind Cricket World Champion. He is a perfect example of converting disability into opportunity. He faced a lot of financial and social troubles but didn’t lose hope. He has 32 centuries in his name.
H. Boniface Prabhu –
Prabhu’s life came to a standstill when he became a quadriplegic, due to a botched lumbar puncture, at the age of four. But he still completed his education and his hard work and determination made him leading quadriplegic wheelchair tennis player. He became the winner in 1998 World Championship. He was awarded Padma Shri by Government of India in 2014.
Arunima Sinha –
Arunima became the first woman amputee to climb Mt. Everest. She lost her leg in a train accident when some robbers pushed her out of a moving train. But the look of pity and sympathy in everyone’s eyes didn’t break her spirit and she made history with a prosthetic leg.
Rajendra Singh Rahelu –
At just eight months old, Rajendra contracted polio, he could not walk since then. He didn’t pursue studies after completing schooling. In 1996, his powerlifter friend encouraged him to pursue a career in sports and he created history after winning a silver medal in powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2014.
Malathi Krishnamurthy Holla –
Malathi got paralyzed at the age of one due to high fever. For two years, she received a regular electric shock and got strength in the upper body, but her lower body remained week. She pursued her career in sports and won Gold in 200m, shot put, discus and javelin throw at the 1989 World Masters’ Games in Denmark. She is the recipient of the Arjuna Award and Padma Shri.
