He-Man of Bollywood Dharmendra passes away aged 89
Legendary Bollywood actor Dharmendra, fondly known as the He-Man of Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 89 in Mumbai, leaving millions of fans across generations mourning the loss of one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic stars. The veteran actor had recently been discharged from Breach Candy Hospital, where he had been under critical care and life support since early November. Doctors had reported that he was stable and recovering at home, requesting the public to believe only official health updates and pray for his well-being. However, despite the hopeful signs, Dharmendra breathed his last after battling prolonged illness.
Born on December 8, 1935, Dharmendra had a spectacular career spanning more than six decades and appeared in over 300 films, making him one of the most successful and admired actors in Indian film history. He holds the record for delivering the highest number of hit films in Hindi cinema and was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2012.
He made his debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and rose to fame with classics like Phool Aur Patthar, Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Shikar, Seeta Aur Geeta, Jugnu, and Yaadon Ki Baaraat. His iconic portrayal of Veeru in Sholay remains one of cinema’s most unforgettable roles. Known equally for romantic, comic, action and emotional characters, the superstar ruled the industry from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Even in later years, Dharmendra delivered acclaimed performances in films such as Life in a… Metro, Apne, Johnny Gaddaar, Yamla Pagla Deewana, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani. His last release was Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024), and he was scheduled to appear in Sriram Raghavan’s war drama Ikkis.
With his passing, Indian cinema loses a towering figure whose legacy will forever remain unmatched.
