The Untold Story Behind ANR's Suicide Attempt
During the International Film Festival of India held in Goa, actor Nagarjuna Akkineni shared an emotional and lesser-known chapter from the life of his father, legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR). Reflecting on ANR’s struggles, Nagarjuna revealed how severe criticism during ANR's early career had pushed him to the brink of despair.
As a young actor, ANR often portrayed female characters on stage. The mockery and harsh criticism he received for his "feminine" mannerisms deeply wounded him. At one point, overwhelmed by negativity, ANR reportedly went to Marina Beach, considering ending his life. Standing waist-deep in the sea, he experienced a moment of clarity and resilience, deciding to return to shore and refuse defeat.
Nagarjuna also highlighted ANR’s dedication to his craft, mentioning unconventional methods he used to modify his voice for more masculine roles. These included smoking cigars and yelling at the ocean to roughen his vocal tone. Despite early struggles, ANR went on to become a cinematic legend, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema.
ANR passed away on January 22, 2014, after battling stomach cancer, but his legacy and inspiring journey continue to resonate deeply with fans and admirers.
