After Assembly Revolt, Mamata Faces Fresh Challenge from Dissident MPs
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing one of the most serious internal crises in its history as signs emerge that a rebellion, which recently shook the party in the West Bengal Assembly, could spread to its parliamentary ranks. The party, led by Mamata Banerjee, has already suffered a major setback after a group of dissident MLAs successfully challenged the leadership and took control of the legislature party.
The revolt, spearheaded by Ritabrata Banerjee, marked an unprecedented moment for a party that has traditionally revolved around Mamata Banerjee’s authority. The development resulted in the Assembly Speaker recognizing the rebel faction, raising concerns about the stability of the party’s leadership structure.
Adding to the uncertainty, senior Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy warned that a similar situation could unfold in Parliament. His remarks have fueled speculation that disgruntled MPs in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha may be considering a challenge to the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee.
Meanwhile, senior MP Sougata Roy dismissed suggestions of an imminent collapse, accusing the BJP of attempting to engineer defections within the party. However, growing dissatisfaction among some MPs, including Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, has intensified speculation about possible parliamentary unrest.
Party sources indicate that Mamata Banerjee has initiated discussions with dissidents in an effort to prevent further divisions. With the TMC holding 28 Lok Sabha seats and 13 Rajya Sabha seats, any large-scale split could significantly alter the party’s national standing. Political observers believe the coming weeks may determine whether the Assembly rebellion remains an isolated episode or evolves into a wider struggle for control of the TMC organization.
