Andhra Pradesh Commits to 72.6 GW Renewable Energy by 2030, Eyes Global Leadership in Green Energy- Naidu
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu reaffirmed Andhra Pradesh's ambitious plan to generate 72.60 GW of renewable energy by 2030, aligning with India’s broader goal of producing 500 GW by the same year. Speaking at the Chief Ministerial Plenary during the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investment Meet in Gandhinagar, Naidu emphasized that this initiative will not only foster job creation and environmental protection but will also position the state as a leader in the global green energy market.
Showcasing the state's vast potential in renewable energy, the Chief Minister invited global investors to tap into Andhra Pradesh's favorable conditions, including its long coastline, strong industrial base, and investor-friendly policies like tax breaks and subsidies. "I aim to create one of the best ecosystems for green energy in India," Naidu said, promoting solar, wind, pumped storage, and green hydrogen as key focus areas.
He also highlighted the state's commitment to research and development, and policy support, announcing plans to establish a Global University for Clean Energy and Circular Economy to drive innovation in renewable energy technologies.
The state’s renewable energy targets include 40 GW of solar, 20 GW of wind, 12 GW of pumped storage, and 25 GW of battery energy storage. Additionally, Andhra Pradesh plans to produce 1 MTPA (million tonnes per annum) of green hydrogen, 2,500 KLPD of biofuels, and install 500 public charging stations for electric vehicles by 2030.
The Chief Minister also revealed plans to establish 26 model solar villages, install rooftop solar panels in 10 lakh households under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijili Yojana, and solarize government buildings, aiming for a total of 150 MW by 2025-26. The state has already installed significant renewable energy infrastructure, including over 4,000 MW of solar and wind power generation and feeder-level solarisation of agricultural feeders.
Naidu also announced that Andhra Pradesh is advancing pumped storage projects at 39 locations, with the potential to generate 43.89 GW to support the state's variable renewable energy (VRE) generation and minimize grid imbalances.
Under the draft ICE Policy 2024, the state is prioritizing renewable energy development by offering critical incentives, including waiving transmission and wheeling charges for wind projects, sector-specific capital and interest subsidies, and production incentives for renewable energy equipment manufacturers.
Special Chief Secretary (Energy) K. Vijayanand accepted an award on behalf of the state for its efforts in setting up solar parks in Anantapur, presented by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.
