BJP Loses Its 25-Year Consistent Seat Of Panaji To Congress

Following 25 years of back to back run, the BJP on Thursday lost the Panaji Assembly constituency to Congress' Atanasio Monserrate by 1,758 votes.

The seat was spoken to by the late Goa Chief Minister and former Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar for a limit of the period since 1994.

While Mr. Monserrate polled 8,748 votes, the BJP competitor polled 6,990 votes. AAP's Valmiki Naik and Subhash Velingkar of the Goa Suraksha Manch polled 236 and 516 votes, separately.

"This is a triumph of the Congress party and a vote in favor of the improvement of the State capital, which it was denied of, for the last such huge numbers of years," Mr. Monserrate said after the outcome was reported.

The by-poll in Panaji Assembly constituency was held after the passing of MLA and Chief Minister Parrikar on March 17 following a drawn-out fight with pancreatic malignant growth.

Mr. Parrikar had first won in Panaji in 1994 and held it until 2014 when he was drafted in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet. In his nonappearance, the seat was spoken to twice by his associate Mr. Kuncalienkar. On his arrival to State legislative issues in 2017, Manohar Parrikar was by and by chosen as Panaji MLA in a by-poll held after his taking over as Chief Minister of BJP-drove alliance government.
