Bangladesh Plans to Invite PM Modi for Tarique Rahman’s Swearing-In Ceremony
Bangladesh is reportedly preparing to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other regional leaders to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Tarique Rahman as the country’s next Prime Minister on February 17. According to sources familiar with the development, Dhaka has already communicated its intent to New Delhi, although no official invitation has yet been publicly confirmed.
Rahman’s party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has indicated that leaders from several neighbouring countries will be invited to witness the oath-taking ceremony. The move is seen as an effort to strengthen diplomatic ties and underline Bangladesh’s commitment to regional cooperation at the start of a new political chapter.
However, Prime Minister Modi is unlikely to attend the event in person due to prior commitments. He is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai on the same day. In his absence, India is expected to depute a senior government representative to participate in the ceremony.
In a recent phone conversation, Modi congratulated Rahman on his party’s decisive victory in the parliamentary elections. The Indian Prime Minister expressed his best wishes and reaffirmed India’s continued support for Bangladesh’s development. Highlighting the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between the two nations, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to ensuring peace, progress, and prosperity for both countries.
The upcoming swearing-in ceremony is expected to draw significant regional attention as Bangladesh ushers in a new leadership phase.
