Biden and Modi Reaffirm Commitment to Peaceful Resolution of Russia-Ukraine Conflict
In a recent phone conversation, U.S. President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed their commitment to resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict peacefully, emphasizing the importance of international law and the UN Charter. This dialogue underscores the need to respect Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty, which has been under threat since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
Prime Minister Modi, in a post on X, shared, "Spoke to @POTUS @JoeBiden on phone today. We had a detailed exchange of views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine. I reiterated India's full support for early return of peace and stability." He further noted that they discussed the situation in Bangladesh, stressing the importance of restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of minorities, particularly Hindus, in the region.
The White House statement echoed these sentiments, highlighting the leaders' joint support for a peaceful resolution in Ukraine. President Biden also praised Prime Minister Modi for his historic visits to Poland and Ukraine, recognizing his message of peace and humanitarian support, particularly in Ukraine's energy sector.
Additionally, both leaders emphasized their ongoing commitment to collaborate through regional groups like the Quad, aiming to foster peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. While the White House mentioned discussions about the upcoming UN General Assembly, it remains unclear whether Biden and Modi will meet on the sidelines. Prime Minister Modi is expected to attend and address the Assembly.
