Congress Leadership Struggles to Decide on Telangana Chief Minister
In a classic display of political drama, the Congress party in Telangana has yet to elect a Congress Legislature Party leader and Chief Minister, even though they crossed the majority mark in recent elections. The planned oath ceremony at Raj Bhavan was cancelled, leaving the red carpet rolled up and chairs empty.
While Telangana Congress chief Revanth Reddy seemed like the obvious choice due to his prominent role in the campaign and the support of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, internal dissent has delayed the decision. Senior leaders within the party, including Uttam Kumar Reddy, Bhatti Vikramarka, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, and Damodar Rajanarasimha, reportedly opposed Revanth Reddy's candidature.
Critics point to Revanth Reddy's inexperience in government and past controversies within the party. Despite these challenges, Revanth Reddy has garnered support from 42 MLAs, potentially causing unrest if he is not chosen.
The Congress leadership held meetings with MLAs and leaders to find a resolution, but the decision ultimately rests with the "high command." The delay in leadership selection underscores the party's struggle to reach consensus, leaving Telangana in political limbo.
