Cyclone Michaung Forces Closure of US Consulate and Visa Centers in Chennai
Cyclone Michaung has disrupted daily life in Tamil Nadu, particularly impacting the bustling city of Chennai. Anticipated to unleash intense rainfall and powerful winds, this cyclone has prompted precautionary measures, including the closure of the U.S. Consulate in Chennai.
The U.S. Consulate, in conjunction with the American Center and Education USA office, has canceled all visa appointments scheduled for Monday and will subsequently reschedule them. Furthermore, it will remain closed to the public on Monday to ensure the safety of its visitors and staff.
Visa applicants have also been affected, as VFS Global has announced the closure of Visa Application Centres on December 4, 2023, due to local weather advisories associated with Cyclone Michaung. Those with confirmed appointments for this date are encouraged to visit VFS centres between December 5 and December 8 during regular business hours (8 AM to 3 PM) with their appointment letters for December 4, 2023, to submit their visa applications.
Chennai, the state capital, witnessed heavy rainfall resulting in waterlogged subways and major roads. The adverse weather conditions temporarily suspended operations at Chennai airport, leading to the cancellation of 70 flights.
As Cyclone Michaung sweeps across northern coastal areas, these measures reflect a commitment to safety and preparedness in the face of nature's fury.
