Fact Check: Viral Claim About Israel Striking North Korean Embassy in Tehran Is False
Amid rising tensions in West Asia, social media was flooded with claims that Israel had carried out a missile strike on North Korea’s embassy in Tehran and that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had reacted angrily by saying that Israel had made a “huge mistake.” However, fact-checking of the viral claim shows that the reports are unverified and misleading.
The rumour began circulating widely across platforms such as X and Telegram during the ongoing military tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States. The posts suggested that Israeli forces had mistakenly targeted North Korea’s diplomatic mission in Tehran.
A review of international news reports, diplomatic statements and North Korean state media reveals that there is no credible evidence supporting these claims. No confirmed reports indicate that the North Korean embassy was struck during Israeli military operations.
Similarly, there is no official record of Kim Jong Un making the statement that Israel had made a “huge mistake.” While North Korea has criticised US and Israeli military actions in Iran, those statements were general condemnations of regional military operations and did not reference any attack on its embassy.
Experts note that misinformation often spreads rapidly during geopolitical crises, particularly when real military operations are taking place. In such situations, dramatic claims or quotes attributed to world leaders can gain traction online even without verification.
In this case, the viral posts appear to have emerged from speculation and were amplified through social media sharing. Fact-checking organisations and international media outlets have found no evidence that Israel struck the North Korean embassy or that Kim Jong Un issued the widely circulated warning.
