Fuel Panic Grips Hyderabad Despite Assurances of Adequate Supply
Panic buying of fuel continued to grip Hyderabad despite repeated assurances from authorities and oil marketing companies that supplies are sufficient for the next 60 days. Officials, including district administrators and police, emphasized that there is no shortage of petrol or diesel, but an unexpected surge in demand has temporarily disrupted availability at some outlets.
Long queues were witnessed across the city, with fuel stations in areas such as Chaderghat, Mehdipatnam, Madhapur, Ameerpet, and Dilsukhnagar seeing heavy rush throughout the day. By evening, several outlets were overcrowded, reflecting growing public anxiety.
Major oil companies like Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) issued joint statements urging citizens to avoid panic buying. They clarified that the sudden spike in purchases had briefly affected supply at certain locations but insisted that overall reserves remain stable.
District Collector Harichandana Dasari and Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar reiterated that authorities are closely monitoring the situation. However, public skepticism persisted, with many motorists fearing potential shortages if conditions worsen.
Adding to the chaos, reports emerged of some fuel station workers selling petrol and diesel in cans at higher prices, exploiting the situation. Despite efforts by police and civil supplies officials to ensure transparency, the panic-driven demand continues to challenge normal distribution across the city.
