Google Announces Further Job Cuts and Automation Drive in 2024 Amid Focus on AI Advancements
Google, under Alphabet's ownership, is set to implement additional job cuts throughout the current year, according to a memo from CEO Sundar Pichai to employees. The CEO stated that the layoffs would prioritize "removing layers to simplify execution and drive velocity in some areas." The company aims to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) software and automation in upcoming rounds of layoffs, with a focus on lightening workloads.
Pichai emphasized that these role eliminations would not be as extensive as the reductions made last year and would not impact every team. The memo, as reported by The Verge, highlighted Google's ambitious goals and its commitment to investing in significant priorities in the coming year.
In recent actions, Google has already terminated hundreds of employees working on Voice Assistant units, Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit hardware teams, advertising sales, and augmented reality. Notably, these cuts affected both rank-and-file employees and executives, with 630 workers laid off, including four vice presidents and 25 directors, according to Bloomberg. The Alphabet Workers Union, representing some Google employees, reported that over 1,000 workers have been let go in total.
As part of this reorganization, the co-founders of Fitbit, James Park, and Eric Friedman, are also departing from Google. The move aligns with Google's ongoing efforts to streamline operations and intensify its focus on advancements in artificial intelligence, including the recent unveiling of the Gemini model.
