Google Leans Heavily on AI for Code Development as AI-Driven Revenue Grows
Google is rapidly embracing artificial intelligence (AI) in its development process, with over a quarter of its new software code now generated by AI, according to CEO Sundar Pichai. During Google’s Q3 2024 earnings call, Pichai highlighted AI’s central role in Google’s growth strategy, with engineers still overseeing and approving AI-generated code. The shift underscores Google’s commitment to AI at a time when Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reported a substantial quarterly revenue of $88.3 billion.
Google’s services, including its Search division, generated $76.5 billion, marking a 13% year-over-year increase. Google Cloud, which offers AI-driven infrastructure for businesses, achieved $11.4 billion in revenue, reflecting a significant 35% growth. Other innovations include AI-powered tools on YouTube for video summaries and titles, an automated note-taking feature in Google Meet, and AI-driven features in the popular Pixel 9 smartphone series.
Operating income also saw substantial gains, with Google Services reaching $30.9 billion, up from $23.9 billion a year ago. Google Cloud’s operating income jumped to $1.95 billion, underscoring the profitability of AI-enhanced services. AI is also shaping Google’s products, from AI enhancements in Search to “Gems,” personalized AI chatbots powered by its Gemini model.
However, Google faces regulatory hurdles, as the US Department of Justice has labelled it a monopoly in the search and advertising markets, potentially opening discussions on a breakup. The final decision on this case remains pending, yet the outcome could significantly impact Google’s market structure.
