Himanta Biswa Sarma to Begin Second Consecutive Term as Assam Chief Minister
Senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday following the NDA’s massive victory in the state elections. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara, Guwahati, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers, and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya will administer the oath of office and secrecy.
Along with Sarma, four NDA legislators will also be sworn in as ministers. They include BJP leaders Ajanta Neog and Rameshwar Teli, AGP president Atul Bora, and BPF leader Charan Boro. Neog, Bora, and Boro were part of Sarma’s previous cabinet, while former Union minister Rameshwar Teli is returning to state politics.
At 57, Sarma becomes the first non-Congress leader in Assam to serve as Chief Minister for two consecutive terms. His leadership has further strengthened the BJP’s influence in the northeastern state since the NDA first came to power in 2016 under Sarbananda Sonowal.
The NDA achieved a historic victory by winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly. The BJP alone secured 82 seats, while alliance partners AGP and BPF won 10 seats each. Officials expect more than one lakh people to attend the oath-taking ceremony, including BJP panchayat members and supporters from across the state.
Security arrangements have been significantly tightened across Guwahati for the event, with both central and state police forces monitoring the city. Various government departments are coordinating arrangements under the supervision of Chief Secretary Ravi Kota to ensure the ceremony proceeds smoothly and peacefully.
