In India's World Cup roster, Ashwin replaces Axar Patel.
ICC announced on Thursday that India have named veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin as the replacement for injured spin bowling all-rounder Axar Patel in their 15-man selection for the upcoming ODI World Cup.
Axar sustained a quadriceps tear and is not anticipated to recover any time soon, compelling the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to include Ashwin, who took four wickets in two ODIs against Australia in the squad.
"Axar Patel did not recuperate in time for the World Cup after suffering a left quadriceps strain against Bangladesh during India's Asia Cup Super Four match. "As a result, the spin-bowling all-rounder missed the Asia Cup final," the ICC stated in a press release.
"Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been named his replacement after an impressive return to ODI cricket against Australia in which he took four wickets in two games," the release continued.
When Axar failed to recuperate in time for the third ODI against Australia in Rajkot, the writing was on the wall.
Ashwin travelled to Guwahati with the Indian team, where they will play their first warm-up match against England on September 30.
