India Urges Caution for Citizens in Kenya Amid Violent Protests
India has advised its citizens in Kenya to exercise extreme caution and limit non-essential movements in response to violent protests in the East African nation against proposed government tax hikes.
“In light of the current tense situation, all Indians in Kenya are advised to exercise utmost caution, restrict non-essential movement, and avoid areas affected by protests and violence until the situation stabilizes,” stated the Indian consulate in Kenya in an advisory posted on social media platform X. “Please stay updated through local news and the Mission’s website and social media channels,” the advisory added.
The protests turned deadly in Nairobi, with at least five protestors shot dead and over 150 injured as police deployed tear gas and live ammunition. The unrest escalated as thousands of demonstrators stormed Kenya’s Parliament and set parts of it on fire.
