Indian-Americans Launch Campaign Supporting Kamala Harris for US Presidency
On Tuesday, a group of Indian-Americans launched the "Indian Americans for Harris" campaign to support Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid for the upcoming US presidential election against Republican nominee Donald Trump. The campaign aims to rally Indian-American voters, particularly in key battleground states, to ensure Harris becomes the first person of Indian heritage to lead the United States.
Swadesh Chatterjee, a businessman from North Carolina, highlighted North Carolina, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Georgia as critical states for the campaign's grassroots efforts. The campaign intends to mobilize Indian-Americans in these areas to vote for Harris, emphasizing her Indian heritage and cultural roots. "This is the first time we have someone whose mother is from India. She has got Indian heritage and culture. I felt that we Indian Americans should support her beyond the party line," Chatterjee said.
According to the campaign's website, Harris's bi-racial heritage embodies America's diversity, resonating with the 12.5% of the population that identifies as biracial. The group believes it's time to celebrate the potential of an Indian-American leading the nation.
The group stated, "We urge you to support Kamala Harris as she is the right choice for the right time. As the world grapples with inequities and disharmony, we need her to lead the US and the free world."
Kamala Harris, the first woman of Indian descent to serve as Vice President, is seen by the group as a milestone in the history of Indian-Americans, one of the most successful immigrant communities in the US. With President Joe Biden stepping down from the race, Harris has taken up the mantle as the Democratic nominee, facing former President Donald Trump in the November 5 election, just 100 days away.
