Indian-Origin Student Killed in Texas Shooting Linked to Iran Conflict Fallout
A 21-year-old student of Indian descent, Savitha Shan, was among two people killed in a shooting in Austin, Texas, in what officials believe may have links to heightened tensions surrounding the Iran conflict.
The incident occurred outside a popular beer garden early Sunday morning. According to authorities, the suspect, identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, opened fire first with a pistol from his parked vehicle before exiting and continuing the attack with a rifle. Fourteen others were injured before police fatally shot him.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating possible terrorism links. Acting Special Agent Alex Doran stated there were indications of a “nexus to terrorism,” citing the suspect’s attire, which included symbols associated with Iran. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that counter-terrorism units nationwide are on high alert following US-Israeli military strikes on Iran.
Shan was a student at the University of Texas at Austin, pursuing dual degrees in economics and management information systems. University President Jim Davis described her as a bright young woman “preparing to change the world.” She was also active in the Austin Tamil Sangam and had entrepreneurial experience, having founded an online sticker business.
Her tragic death has deeply shaken the campus community. Authorities continue to investigate the motive while law enforcement agencies across the United States remain vigilant amid concerns over retaliatory violence connected to international developments.
