KTR on Kaleshwaram Project
Working president of Telangana Rashtra Samithi, K.T.Rama Rao has posted an article on social media. The article is about Telangana’s historic Kaleshwaram Project. This is the world’s largest lift irrigation project.
Farmers in Telangana take a loan to do borehole. The water level is at 1000 feet at times and the cost of boring is 18 lakhs. A farmer will not get enough output to repay such a loan, so he sells a portion of his land. This is a familiar story.
The drinking water problem has affected many regions in India. As per the report from NITI Aayog, about 40% of the Indian population, across 21 cities, will not have access to drinking water by 2030.
Kaleshwaram project has come up as a solution to this problem and state government’s efforts to get Hyderabad excluded from the list of these 21 cities are crucial. The project narrates three important lessons and the whole of India should learn from it.
- Cities’ thrust can be satisfied with proper planning and implementation
- More agencies funding critical projects can complicate timelines and increase overall costs
- Inspiring leadership along with project management skills are needed to ensure smoother execution of the project
