Legal Troubles Mount for Ram Gopal Varma Over Alleged Defamatory Posts Against Chandrababu Naidu
Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, popularly known as RGV, is facing potential arrest after allegedly making defamatory social media posts targeting Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, IT Minister Nara Lokesh, and their families. The Maddipadu police registered a case against Varma on November 11, following a complaint by Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Ramalingam.
The charges, filed under sections of the BNS Act, including Section 336 (4), 353 (2), and Section 67 of the IT Act, stem from the promotional activities of Varma's film Vyuham last year. The posts allegedly tarnished the reputation of political figures, sparking legal action.
Varma, who was summoned to appear before the police on November 25, failed to do so. This prompted the police to visit his Hyderabad residence, but the filmmaker was reportedly unavailable. Sources suggest he may be evading arrest.
In response, Varma's lawyer submitted a letter to the Maddipadu police on November 24, requesting an additional two weeks to comply and proposing a virtual appearance with a minimum seven-day prior notice. The letter emphasized Varma's denial of all allegations, claiming they were driven by ulterior motives. “My client denies each allegation in toto and has no knowledge of the purported accusations in the FIR,” the statement read.
Acknowledging the possibility of arrest, Varma's legal counsel earlier informed the court of his intention to file for bail. Despite the summons issued on November 13, directing his appearance, the filmmaker has yet to comply.
The controversy has drawn significant attention, with Varma's legal team framing the case as a challenge to his constitutional right to work freely. As investigations continue, all eyes remain on the next legal developments in this high-profile case.
