Mass killings on the 4th of July kill 20 people and hurt 126.
During the long Fourth of July holiday weekend, there were parties and fireworks all over the U.S., but there were also mass killings at block parties and other fun events, which left many towns in shock.
The Gun Violence Archive, a website that keeps track of killings across the country, says that there were 22 mass shootings between 5 p.m. ET Friday and 5 a.m. ET Wednesday. Twenty people were killed and 126 were hurt. The website says that there were mass killings over the holidays in 17 states and Washington, D.C. It describes a mass shooting as a single event in which four or more people were hurt or killed.
Mass shooters have happened in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, and Fort Worth, Texas, among other big places. One of the people who were shot was a 15-year-old boy, and many of the people who were hurt were children.
John Cohen, a former acting undersecretary for intelligence at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, said that the holiday shootings showed how hard it is for law enforcement when more and more people carry guns and use them to settle disputes, even if innocent people get caught in the crossfire.
