Need Global Compact on AI to Prevent Misuse: PM Modi at G20 — 300 Words
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the urgent need for a global regulatory framework for Artificial Intelligence (AI) during his address to world leaders at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. Speaking in the session titled “A Fair and Just Future for All – Critical Minerals; Decent Work; Artificial Intelligence,” he emphasized that AI must be developed responsibly with human-centric values, strong ethical oversight, and strict safeguards.
Modi highlighted India’s strategic approach to AI, which is anchored on accessibility, digital inclusion, and skill development. He said the government is developing high-performance computing systems under the India-AI Mission to ensure that technological benefits reach every district and every linguistic community. This, he said, would accelerate innovation and human development.
Calling for a Global AI Compact, Modi outlined core principles, including transparency, safety by design, effective human oversight, and prohibitions against AI misuse for deepfakes, crime, terrorism, and societal manipulation. He emphasized that AI decisions affecting public safety must always remain auditable and ultimately controlled by human beings.
Modi urged nations to focus on future skills rather than present jobs and called for a comprehensive global framework for international talent mobility, noting progress from the New Delhi G20 Summit. He also cautioned against excessive concentration of critical technologies in the hands of a few countries or corporations, which could restrict innovation and deepen inequality.
The Prime Minister advocated for open-source, global, and human-centric technology models rather than finance-driven and exclusive systems. He cited India’s success in achieving the highest digital payments volume globally as an example of inclusive innovation.
Modi invited all G20 nations to participate in the AI Impact Summit scheduled for February 2026 in India, reaffirming the nation’s aim to lead global discussions on ethical technology development.
During the summit, the Prime Minister also held bilateral meetings with several leaders, including Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni, Canada’s PM Mark Carney, and IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva, discussing cooperation in innovation, defence, talent exchange, and trade.
