Non-Resident Indians Disappointed After India Bans Laptop Imports
For concerns of national security and to encourage indigenous production, the Indian government has recently restricted the import of laptops, tablets, and other kinds of computers.
The reaction of non-resident aliens (NRIs) has been particularly divided.
Many non-resident Indians worry that they would be unable to import electronic devices from outside due to new government regulations requiring them to be purchased in India. In addition, many non-resident Indians (NRIs) who visit to India purchase computers as presents for their friends and family back home.
The customs regulations regarding whether or not non-resident Indians may bring computers as part of their carry-on luggage are murky at best. Hopefully, authorities will clarify the situation.
In the wake of Jio's August 1 debut of the laptop they call the "Jiobook" and the government's August 3 imposition of import restrictions, online harassment has reached epidemic proportions.
