Opinion: KCR’s Role in Shaping Telangana’s Destiny
Telangana State Formation Day marks not only the creation of India’s 29th state but also the culmination of a decades-long struggle for self-rule. At the center of this movement was K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), founder of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (now BRS), whose leadership played a decisive role in achieving statehood.
The demand for Telangana emerged after the 1956 merger of Telangana and Andhra regions into Andhra Pradesh. Despite assurances under the Gentlemen’s Agreement, Telangana residents felt marginalized in areas such as water allocation, public funds, and government employment. The dissatisfaction led to the 1969 Telangana agitation, during which hundreds of students lost their lives.
After years of political setbacks and broken promises, KCR launched the TRS in 2001, reviving the movement with a clear and focused agenda. He emphasized constitutional, democratic, and non-violent methods, introducing innovative forms of protest such as the Sakal Janula Samme and Vanta-Varpu programs. His efforts also brought national attention to the issue.
A turning point came in 2009 when KCR began an indefinite hunger strike demanding statehood. The resulting public pressure compelled the central government to initiate the process of creating Telangana. After years of continued advocacy, Telangana officially became a state on June 2, 2014. Supporters view KCR as the architect who transformed a long-standing aspiration into reality.
