PM Modi Receives Ghana’s Top Honour, Boosting India-Africa Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Ghana’s highest civilian honour, the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, during his official visit to the country. The award, presented by President John Mahama, recognizes Modi’s influential global leadership and his contribution to India-Ghana relations.
In his acceptance speech, PM Modi called the honour a symbol of mutual respect and responsibility. “This is not just an honour for me but for every Indian. It reflects our shared vision for a brighter future,” he said. The award marks a key moment in bilateral diplomacy, particularly as this was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over three decades.
The Order of the Star of Ghana is one of the nation’s top honours, awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to Ghana’s development. It has three classes—Companion, Officer, and Member—with Modi receiving the Officer (OSG) rank. The insignia includes a seven-pointed star, adorned with a ribbon featuring Ghana’s national colours: red, yellow, and green.
Past recipients include global figures like Queen Elizabeth II and Brazilian President Lula da Silva, underlining the award's international prestige. Modi joins this elite list as the 24th foreign leader to be recognised globally for statesmanship.
For students, the award offers insight into the importance of diplomacy and international recognition. It highlights how global cooperation, cultural ties, and leadership contribute to fostering peace and development.
PM Modi’s speech encouraged youth to value friendship between nations and understand their roles in shaping global relations. His recognition by Ghana underscores India’s rising influence on the world stage and its commitment to building enduring partnerships.
