PM Modi Sets Sights on 2036 Olympics, Highlights India's Capabilities
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced India's ambitions to host the 2036 Olympics, asserting that the country is making substantial preparations for the event. Speaking on the 78th Independence Day from the Red Fort, Modi emphasized India's capability to manage large-scale global events, citing the successful hosting of the G20 Summit in September as evidence of the nation’s readiness. Competing with nations like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey, India is positioning itself as a strong contender for the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will decide the host city next year.
Modi also praised Indian athletes for their performance in the recent Paris Olympics, where India won six medals, including one silver and five bronze. He acknowledged the achievements of athletes such as Manu Bhaker, who secured two bronze medals, and members of the Indian hockey team, including the retiring goalkeeper P R Sreejesh. Looking ahead, Modi extended his best wishes to the Indian Paralympic team, which will compete in Paris from August 28 to September 8. India had a notable performance in the Tokyo Paralympics with 19 medals, and this year, 84 para-athletes will represent the nation.
