PM Modi Urges UK to Take Legal Action Against Pro-Khalistani Extremism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again raised strong concerns over the activities of pro-Khalistani extremists operating in the United Kingdom, urging British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to take strict legal action against those promoting radicalism and violent extremism. The issue was discussed during their recent meeting, reaffirming India’s consistent request for the UK to prevent misuse of democratic freedoms by extremist elements.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that this topic had previously been raised during Modi’s visit to Britain in July and was brought up again in the latest discussions. Modi stressed that extremist ideologies have no place in democratic societies and must be addressed using the legal frameworks of both countries. He added that pro-Khalistani individuals should not be allowed to exploit the liberties provided by open societies to threaten peace and security.
India has long urged the UK government to curb the activities of such groups, who have been involved in violent protests outside the Indian High Commission in London and have issued threats against Indian diplomats. Modi also expressed condolences for the victims of a recent terror attack on a synagogue in Manchester, where a Syria-born UK citizen carried out a car-ramming and stabbing assault on worshippers during Yom Kippur, resulting in two deaths before the attacker was killed.
Addressing broader concerns, Misri commented on anti-immigration protests in the UK, some of which have targeted Indians. He stated that such issues must be handled by British authorities, though India remains in close cooperation with the UK in tackling illegal migration. Misri emphasized that while India does not support illegal immigration, it strongly favours legal mobility, as it benefits both nations through cultural exchange, economic growth, and community development.
The discussions signal India’s firm stance on security collaboration and its expectation of concrete action from the UK to prevent extremist activities operating from its soil.
