Pakistan’s Independence Day Marred by Deadly Aerial Firing in Karachi

What should have been a day of national pride turned tragic in Karachi, Pakistan, as reckless celebratory gunfire claimed three lives, including an 8-year-old girl, during Independence Day festivities. Over 60 others were injured in citywide incidents.

According to Geo News, the young girl was struck by a stray bullet in Azizabad, while a man named Stephen was killed in Korangi. Another senior citizen also lost his life. Police reported incidents of aerial firing from multiple areas, including Liaquatabad, Lyari, Keamari, Orangi Town, and Paposh Nagar.

Authorities condemned the dangerous tradition, urging citizens to celebrate in safer ways. They assured strict legal action against those responsible.

Karachi has long struggled with firearm-related violence. ARY News reported that in January alone, at least 42 people were killed in firing incidents, while 233 sustained injuries. Many deaths were linked to personal disputes, robbery resistance, and stray bullets during celebrations. Road accidents also contributed significantly to casualties.

Rescue officials warned that celebratory gunfire remains a severe public safety hazard, with bullets often striking bystanders far from the original firing site. Despite repeated awareness campaigns, the practice persists, claiming innocent lives each year.
