Prime Minister spoke to the Indian cricket team on Sunday, congratulating its members on their T20 World Cup victory.
Modi specifically praised Rohit Sharma for his excellent captaincy and outstanding T20 career. He also commended Virat Kohli for his crucial innings in the final and his overall contributions to Indian cricket. Both Sharma and Kohli announced their retirement from T20 internationals following the win. Additionally, Modi applauded Hardik Pandya for his performance in the final over and Suryakumar Yadav for his impressive catch on the boundary line to dismiss David Miller. He also highlighted Jasprit Bumrah’s significant contributions.
The Prime Minister extended his gratitude to coach Rahul Dravid for his vital role in Indian cricket. In posts on social media, Modi expressed admiration for Sharma, Kohli, and Dravid.
To Sharma, Modi said, “You are excellence personified. Your aggressive mindset, batting, and captaincy have given a new dimension to the Indian team. Your T20 career will be remembered fondly. Delighted to have spoken to you earlier today.”
Addressing Kohli, Modi remarked, “Like your innings in the finals, you have anchored Indian batting splendidly. You’ve shone in all forms of the game. T20 cricket will miss you, but I am confident you’ll continue to motivate the new generation of players.”
Praising Dravid, Modi acknowledged his incredible coaching journey that shaped the success of Indian cricket. "His unwavering dedication, strategic insights, and ability to nurture talent have transformed the team. India is grateful for his contributions and for inspiring generations. We are happy to see him lift the World Cup. Happy to have congratulated him," he added.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the team displayed excellent skill and spirit throughout the tournament. He noted that each player’s commitment was very motivating.
