Rahul Gandhi Faces Criticism from Retired Officers Over Parliament Conduct
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has come under sharp criticism from a group of 204 retired officials, including Armed Forces veterans, former bureaucrats, and senior advocates, who have demanded an apology over his conduct during a protest inside Parliament on March 12.
In an open letter addressed to citizens, the signatories stressed that maintaining the dignity of Parliament is central to India’s constitutional values. They argued that elected representatives are expected to uphold decorum across all areas of the parliamentary premises, including corridors, lobbies, and staircases.
The letter described the March 12 protest as “deeply concerning,” noting that it allegedly took place despite clear instructions from the Speaker prohibiting demonstrations within Parliament. According to the signatories, such actions reflected a “deliberate disregard for parliamentary authority” and placed “political theatrics above institutional dignity.”
Particular criticism was directed at visuals showing Rahul Gandhi and other MPs sitting on Parliament steps consuming tea and snacks. The group called this behavior “unbecoming” and inappropriate for members of the nation’s highest legislative body, adding that such spaces should not be used for symbolic protests or spectacle.
The retired officials further accused the Opposition leader of contributing to a decline in public discourse through repeated acts they described as theatrical and disruptive. They argued that such behavior wastes valuable parliamentary time and undermines democratic functioning.
Warning that such actions could damage India’s global reputation, the signatories urged Rahul Gandhi to reflect on his conduct and issue a public apology. The letter concluded by emphasizing the need to preserve the sanctity of Parliament, often referred to as the “temple of democracy,” and called on all leaders to act with responsibility and respect toward democratic institutions.
