Rajya Sabha Passes Triple Talaq Bill!

The proposed law to make triple talaq practice among Muslims a criminal act is passed in Rajya Sabha today. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 is passed in the house after getting 99 votes in favor and 84 against it. Though the bill was passed in Rajya Sabha, it becomes a criminal offense only after President Ram Nath Kovind clears it. While CPM party opposed the bill, BJP is celebrating the occasion!

Union Minister of Law & Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad said today is a historical day as both the houses have given justice to the Muslim women and he also said that it the beginning of a transformational India. But, Congress leader Raj Babbar said, "A civil law has been made criminal law. It's a historic mistake."

Speaking on this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Parliament has abolished triple talaq and corrects a historical wrong done to Muslim women and called it a “gender justice”. “An archaic and medieval practice has finally been confined to the dustbin of history! India rejoices today!” Modi said. Amit Shah congratulated Modi for fulfilling his commitment and ensuring a law to ban Triple Talaq which makes Muslim women free from the curse-like practice.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath said that the passing of bill under the guidance of Modi is a pride moment. “This is for dignity of women, but not aimed at any community,” he added. While BJP members are praising Modi for the success, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that this law will only force women to stay with an imprisoned man who would verbally and emotionally abuse her!
