Russia Offers to Meet India’s Energy Needs Amid Hormuz Crisis
Amid escalating tensions in West Asia and the reported closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Russia has offered to fully meet India’s energy requirements if disruptions persist. An official from the Russian Embassy stated that Moscow stands ready to supply oil and gas to ensure India’s energy security.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime chokepoint through which nearly a third of global seaborne crude flows. Any prolonged shutdown could significantly affect countries dependent on West Asian energy supplies. India, while having diversified sources in recent years, still relies heavily on imports.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has reassured citizens that India maintains adequate crude reserves and sufficient stocks of essential fuels, including petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel. Officials emphasised that diversification strategies now allow access to supplies not routed through Hormuz.
India’s energy trade dynamics have evolved since the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Russian crude imports rising sharply before tapering following trade negotiations with the United States under President Donald Trump.
With QatarEnergy halting LNG output after drone strikes and regional instability mounting, policymakers face complex decisions balancing geopolitical commitments and domestic energy needs. Whether India deepens Russian imports again or awaits stabilisation in West Asia remains a strategic question with far-reaching economic implications.
