Russia to Release Indians Forced into Army After PM Modi's Intervention
Russia has agreed to release and facilitate the return of all Indians forced to fight for the Russian army in Ukraine, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention during his visit to Moscow, sources revealed on Tuesday.
The breakthrough came after Prime Minister Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Moscow, raised the issue with President Vladimir Putin at a private dinner hosted by Putin on Monday evening. Around two dozen Indians were reportedly tricked by agents into joining the war against Ukraine under the false promise of high-paying jobs.
In March, the Indian government had "strongly" urged Russian authorities to secure the early release of these individuals. The government also initiated strong actions against the agents who deceived the recruits.
Reports indicate that four Indians have died in the conflict, while ten have managed to return to India. Approximately 35-40 Indians remain trapped in Russia, highlighting a significant concern for New Delhi. Instances have emerged of Indians being defrauded and coerced by scammers into fighting for the Russian army, which accepts recruits from other countries. Some affected individuals even shared videos on social media, pleading for government intervention.
India's Foreign Ministry has been actively working to bring back the recruits tricked by agents. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar described the issue as a "very deep concern" for India, noting ongoing engagements with Russia to resolve the matter.
Earlier this year, two Indians from Gujarat, Ashvinbhai Mangukiya and Mohammad Asfan, were killed in the Ukraine war, with two more reported dead in June. India has consistently opposed the recruitment of its nationals into the Russian army amidst the conflict, citing its diplomatic partnership with Russia.
The Indian government has also demanded an end to such recruitment practices. This recent breakthrough during PM Modi’s visit brings significant relief to the families of those still trapped in Russia. Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Moscow on Monday evening, will hold bilateral talks with Putin and attend the 22nd India-Russia summit. This visit marks his first trip to Russia since the conflict began and his first since being re-elected for a third term.
