Sri Lanka Rescues 32 Sailors from Sinking Iranian Naval Ship
Sri Lankan authorities successfully rescued 32 sailors from the distressed Iranian naval vessel Iris Dena off the island’s southern coast, averting what could have been a far greater maritime tragedy. The operation was launched after Sri Lanka’s navy received an emergency alert indicating that the ship, carrying approximately 180 personnel, was in serious difficulty at sea.
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath informed Parliament that naval ships and air force aircraft were immediately deployed for rescue efforts. The swift coordination highlights Sri Lanka’s strategic maritime capabilities in the Indian Ocean, a region increasingly affected by geopolitical tensions.
According to Dr Anil Jasinghe, a senior health ministry official, the rescued sailors were admitted to hospital upon arrival. One individual remains in critical condition, seven are undergoing emergency treatment, and others are being treated for minor injuries. Authorities have not yet disclosed how the vessel sustained damage or the circumstances leading to the injuries.
The incident occurs amid heightened regional instability, adding further complexity to maritime security in surrounding waters. While details remain limited, the humanitarian response underscores Sri Lanka’s role in ensuring safety along vital sea lanes.
Investigations are expected to clarify the cause of the vessel’s distress and assess any broader implications for regional naval operations.
