Struggling Auto Drivers in Telangana Turn to Daily Labor Amid Declining Incomes
In Telangana, auto drivers are facing tough times as the popularity of the free travel facility on RTC buses among women has led to a significant decrease in their earnings. Many of these auto drivers, who had purchased their vehicles through loans from finance companies or banks, find it challenging to meet their EMIs, as their incomes have reportedly dropped by more than 50 percent.
The auto drivers operating hired autos are particularly affected, revealing that they have ceased taking autos for rent due to difficulties in covering the rental expenses. Instead, they are transitioning into daily wage laborers, seeking employment in rural farm areas to sustain their families.
Prior to the implementation of the Maha Lakshmi scheme by the government, around 30 autos used to operate daily between Patancheru and Shankarampet town. However, this number has dwindled to below 10. G Bikshapathi, an auto driver who had been operating between Shankarampet and Patancheru for over eight years, shared his struggle, stating that he used to earn Rs.1,500 daily. After deducting Rs.500 for diesel and Rs.5,000 as EMI for the auto purchased three years ago, he used to lead a decent life. However, his daily income has now plummeted to Rs.500.
Expressing the dire situation, Bikshapathi mentioned that many fellow auto drivers have left the profession, opting for labor work as they could no longer earn a sufficient income.
Another auto driver, Ankenagari Masaiah Goud, pointed out that over 60 percent of his passengers were women. However, with most of these passengers now choosing RTC buses, he is struggling to provide for his family. In response to their challenges, auto drivers staged multiple protests across the district on Saturday, urging the government to address their issues and find a solution to their financial woes.
