Telangana has added eight new medical schools.
The State government of Telangana approved the establishment of eight new medical schools on Wednesday, ensuring that each of the state's districts would soon have access to at least one such institution. As a result, the total number of available MBBS slots in the state has increased to over 9,000 (across both public and private institutions). Officials believe that this remarkable achievement would revolutionise healthcare access and medical education by making Telangana the first state in the nation to have a government medical college in each district. The state's development into a leader in medical education has been called "extraordinary" by authorities. Only three public medical schools existed in the state until 2014. Nonetheless, it is remarkable that 29 medical schools have been founded in just nine years.
Next year, 100 MBBS seats will be available at the newly recognised medical institutions in the districts of Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet, Mulugu, Warangal, Medak, Yadadri Bhongiri, Rangareddy, and Medchal Malkajgiri. The state of Telangana will soon have an impressive 34 government medical institutions when these additions are made.
