Telugu People Are Freaking out after the US banned rice
The Indian government has banned the sale of white rice that is not basmati. This is to keep local prices down and keep food inflation in check. India has been the biggest producer of rice in the world, with non-basmati rice making up 80% of all exports. This choice could affect the amount of grain available around the world.
Since 2012, India has been the biggest supplier of rice in the world. It sends rice to over 100 countries, including the US.
Indian people in the US, especially those from the Telugu population, can't picture life without food, especially Sona Masuri Rice. People stand in line at food shops like Patel's all the time to buy the Indian brand of rice.
Some Indian shops have already raised the price of each 20-pound bag by $8 because of the ban and higher demand.
Reports say that this ban could change the amount of rice in the US and how much it costs. It could make prices go up even more than they are now, and the USA would be hardest hit because it is one of the top places where exports go.
We have no idea how long this ban will last. As long as shopping shops have enough food on hand, there shouldn't be a big problem right now.
But if the ban lasts for a long time, the Telugu people might have to eat Mexican rice for a while, which is not as popular as Sona Masuri Rice.
