Tilak Varma’s Maiden IPL Century Powers Mumbai Indians to Dominant Win
Tilak Varma delivered a sensational performance, smashing his maiden IPL century to guide Mumbai Indians to a commanding 99-run victory over Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. His unbeaten 101 off just 45 balls marked a turning point for the five-time champions, who had been struggling with poor form in recent matches.
Initially, Tilak appeared out of rhythm, scoring a slow 19 off 22 deliveries. However, a crucial intervention by captain Hardik Pandya during the strategic timeout sparked a dramatic shift. Tilak responded in style, blasting 82 runs off his next 23 balls in a breathtaking display of power-hitting. His innings, decorated with eight boundaries and seven sixes, lifted Mumbai to a competitive total of 199 for 5.
Earlier, Gujarat Titans’ pacer Kagiso Rabada had rattled Mumbai’s top order with an impressive spell, picking up three key wickets. Despite this, Tilak’s late onslaught, especially in the final six overs that yielded 96 runs, completely changed the momentum.
In response, Gujarat Titans faltered from the outset. Jasprit Bumrah struck on the very first ball, dismissing Sai Sudharsan and breaking his wicket drought. The Titans’ batting lineup never recovered, collapsing for just 100 runs in 15.5 overs. Left-arm seamer Ashwani Kumar played a decisive role, claiming 4 for 24, while Mitchell Santner provided solid support.
The loss exposed weaknesses in Gujarat’s middle order, particularly the underwhelming performances of Rahul Tewatia and M Shahrukh Khan. Mumbai’s emphatic win not only ended their four-match losing streak but also boosted their net run rate and confidence for the remainder of the tournament.
