US Lawmakers Condemn Lynching of Hindu Garment Worker in Bangladesh, Urge Protection of Minorities

The United States has strongly condemned the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu garment worker in Bangladesh, amid growing concern over rising religious violence in the country. The US State Department reiterated its commitment to religious freedom and minority rights, calling for the protection of all communities in Bangladesh.

Responding to queries from IANS, a State Department spokesperson said the US “unequivocally condemns religious violence in all its forms” and supports freedoms of religion, expression, peaceful assembly, and association. The spokesperson added that Washington welcomed steps being taken by Bangladesh’s interim government to ensure the safety and security of all communities.

The condemnation follows the killing of 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, a garment worker from Bhaluka, who was allegedly attacked by a mob on December 18 over accusations of blasphemy. Reports say he was beaten to death and his body set on fire, triggering outrage among human rights groups and minority advocates.

US lawmakers have also spoken out sharply on the incident. Congressman Ro Khanna described the killing as “horrific” and offered condolences to the victim’s family. “We must unequivocally condemn and speak out against these vile acts of hatred and bigotry,” Khanna said in a post on X.

Advocacy groups in Washington say the killing reflects a broader pattern of rising attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus. They cite incidents of mob violence, vandalism of religious sites, and intimidation across several regions following recent political upheaval.

While the State Department did not disclose details of diplomatic engagements, it reiterated that religious freedom is a core element of US foreign policy. Officials said concerns related to minority safety are regularly raised through diplomatic channels and reflected in global human rights reporting. The situation in Bangladesh continues to draw close international scrutiny.
