A verified Twitter user unfollowed 4.21 million people.
Everyone on Twitter has been unfollowed, and it's unclear if Twitter Verified is still following them.
Twitter has started a mass unfollowing and now follows "no one," suggesting that removing old verified accounts is beginning.
The following has reached rock bottom on the 'Twitter Verified' account, the lowest possible value.
Twitter has previously warned that beginning on April 1, all legacy verified accounts would be shut down and even the checkmarks removed for those who still had them but did not have a Twitter Blue subscription. However, it is now being determined if Twitter Verified is still following them after they have all been unfollowed.
According to an earlier report by Variety, verified accounts from before Elon Musk's takeover will only lose that status if they upgrade to Twitter Blue or the business-focused Twitter Verified Organizations plan.
Verified blue checkmarks will only appear for users that pay for Twitter Blue, which in the US costs USD 8 per month via the web and USD 11 per month via in-app purchases on iOS and Android.
Twitter Blue, previously only offered in select countries, is now available everywhere.
On April 1st, we will start deprecating the legacy verified badge and winding down the programme. Sign up for Twitter Blue to maintain your verified status," Twitter announced via its official handle. Twitter, however, has not disclosed how it will handle accounts belonging to people who are "notable" on the platform.
Twitter now uses a grey checkmark for government accounts and a new gold one for businesses and brands. As previously announced, the new Twitter Verified Organizations programme in the United States will cost $1,000 per month (plus tax) for the main account and $50 per month (plus tax) for each additional affiliate subaccount.
In 2009, Twitter introduced verified accounts as a way for people to confirm that the profiles of prominent figures, businesses, media outlets, and others deemed to be "of public interest" were authentic and not fakes. Previously, there were no verification fees from the company.
Musk introduced Twitter Blue, which included the verified badge as a paid feature, less than two weeks after he took control of the company.
