AP vs Telangana: Dispute Over Srisailam project

A few days earlier Andhra Pradesh government issued an order to irrigation department to draw an additional quantity of six to eight tmc (thousand million cubic feet) of water per day from Srisailam reservoir on the Krishna river.

Telangana has called this project as illegal and has urged the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) to prevent the neighbouring State from taking up any further action such as calling for tenders.

As on one hand, the Telangana government described the order as illegal, unilateral and against the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, AP, on the other, stated that the new schemes were well within the state’s rights and the proposed project is not illegal.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said that any project taken up in either of the states, it is mandatory for the respective state to get the approval from an apex committee set up for this purpose. The committee consists of the Union Minister for Water Resources and the chief ministers of the two states.

Meanwhile, KCR has directed the officials to petition the Supreme Court seeking remedy on the share of the state in the Krishna water. The issue is currently pending before a tribunal.
