Andhra Pradesh Boosts Incentives for Medallists with Revised Sports Policy
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has unveiled plans to enhance the state’s sports policy, aiming to make it the best in the country. In a review meeting at the State Secretariat, Naidu emphasized the need for robust incentives to honor and motivate athletes, ensuring they receive the recognition they deserve.
The state government announced substantial increases in cash rewards for Olympic medallists, with gold medallists now set to receive ₹7 crore, up from ₹75 lakh. Silver medallists will be awarded ₹5 crore, a significant jump from ₹50 lakh, while bronze medallists will receive ₹3 crore, up from ₹30 lakh. Participants in the Olympics will also be rewarded with ₹50 lakh each, underlining Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to supporting top-tier athletes.
The new policy extends similar incentives for Asian Games medallists, with cash awards of ₹4 crore for gold, ₹2 crore for silver, and ₹1 crore for bronze. Athletes participating in the Asian Games will receive ₹10 lakh each as a token of encouragement.
Naidu highlighted plans to increase the sports employment quota from 2% to 3%, fostering a supportive environment for athletes in both their careers and training. The state’s revamped sports policy is built around four pillars: promoting “sports for all,” nurturing talent, strengthening the sports ecosystem, and achieving global visibility. The proposed amendments to the policy will soon be presented to the Cabinet for approval, solidifying Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to becoming a leading state in sports development.
