Astronaut Sunita Williams to Cast Vote from Space in 2024 US Elections
Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams and her NASA colleague Butch Wilmore are preparing to make history in 2024 by voting from space. Both astronauts are currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), where they have been conducting scientific research since June 2024. Originally scheduled for a brief eight-day mission, their stay aboard the ISS has been extended to eight months due to technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which was intended to bring them back to Earth.
Despite their prolonged stay in space, Williams and Wilmore are determined to fulfill their civic duties by casting their votes in the upcoming US presidential elections. In a recent press conference from space, Williams expressed excitement about the unique opportunity, stating, “We’ve already sent our requests for ballots and are looking forward to voting from space.”
NASA has streamlined the process to allow astronauts to vote while in orbit, making it easy for them to participate in the democratic process despite their physical distance from Earth. Both Williams and Wilmore emphasized the importance of voting, calling it their responsibility as American citizens. This marks yet another chapter in Williams’s illustrious career, as she continues to inspire people both on Earth and in space.
