Chidambaram Sent To Tihar Jail!

Former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram was sent to Tihar jail yesterday by a special court in money laundering case related to INX Media. Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar ordered 14-day judicial custody of Chidambaram till September 19.

On Thursday evening, Chidambaram was brought to Tihar jail and had a mandatory medical check-up. He was given no special facilities. He was allowed to carry his spectacles and his prescribed medicines to the jail. Since he enjoyed Z-security, he was kept in a separate cell. He can access the jail library or can watch television in specified time duration.

Chidambaram ate roti, dal, sabji and rice as per jail’s menu last night. Today morning, he had a light breakfast. After the court’s order to send him to jail, when he was asked about his opinion, he said, “I am worried only about the economy”.

Chidambaram was in fifteen-days CBI’s custody after his arrest on 21^st August. In May 2017, CBI had lodged an FIR, alleging that during Chidambaram's tenure as finance minister in 2007, irregularities were seen in FIPB clearance granted to INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore. After that, ED lodged a money laundering case in 2017.
