Congress MLA Rekulapally Bhoopathi’s Remarks on PM Modi Spark Political Controversy

Telangana Congress MLA Rekulapally Bhoopathi Reddy has landed in controversy after making remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi that have been condemned as disrespectful and inflammatory. Speaking at a local event in Nizamabad Rural constituency, Bhoopathi questioned the BJP’s portrayal of Lord Ram and asked, “If Modi dies, will Lord Rama cease to exist? How many more days will Modi live? He is already 75.”
The comments quickly went viral, prompting a strong reaction from BJP leaders, who accused the Congress MLA of insulting both the Prime Minister and Hindu beliefs. The BJP stated that his remarks reflected “the Congress party’s deep-rooted disregard for Hindu sentiments.”
Party leaders demanded an apology and called on the Congress high command to take disciplinary action against Bhoopathi. BJP spokespersons also accused Congress of politicizing religion and undermining India’s cultural values.
Bhoopathi, meanwhile, defended his comments as being taken out of context, claiming he only intended to highlight the BJP’s tendency to equate Modi with divine figures. His clarification, however, did little to calm the political storm.
The incident has reignited debates over political rhetoric and the use of religion in Indian politics. Observers note that such remarks, whether intentional or not, risk deepening divisions between communities and eroding the decorum expected in public discourse.
As the controversy grows, the Telangana Congress leadership faces increasing pressure to distance itself from Bhoopathi’s statements, while BJP leaders continue to leverage the issue ahead of upcoming elections.
