Despite its melodramatic tone and questionable politics, "Kerala Story," starring Adah Sharma, is a moving film.
Kashmir Files, directed by Vivek Agnihotri, is the first of a new subgenre of films that use tragic real-life events to advance an ideological agenda against a specific group of people. There are many parallels between Sudipto Sen's Kerala Story and this upcoming smash hit from 2022. Both the events depicted in Kashmir Files and Kerala Story are based on genuine tragedies. In this scenario, it's ISIS forcing girls of various faiths to convert to Islam through brainwashing. The depiction of Muslims as being bad is also comparable. Most of the Muslims in this film have questionable motives.
However, these details aside, the importance of the issues that Kerala Story brings to light cannot be denied. You'll find yourself rooting for Shalini, the film's central protagonist, even after she converts to religion.
In the first scene of Kerala Story, young mother Shalini (Adah Sharma) is being questioned by police and is explaining the tragic events that have led to her current predicament. Her history includes a group of pals she met while attending the Nursing School of Kerala in Kasargod. Shalini's first-person narration gives the film its unique voice. Asifa (Sonia Balani), Nimah (Yogita Bihani), and Gitanjali (Siddhi Idani) are her roommates. Asifa has a hidden objective of converting the other three to Islam, and they have no idea about it. Some external male companions are also present.
Asifa is able to radicalise Shalini and Gitanjali with the support of their acquaintances. To ensure the success of their task, these individuals also employ hallucinogenic drugs. Shalini had an unplanned pregnancy after falling in love with one of the men. The intended spouse vanishes without a trace right before the wedding. Therefore, she has no choice but to wed another man. After the wedding, she leaves on an exhausting journey through Pakistan and Afghanistan her route to Syria. What follows is a violent narrative full of Islamophobia.
